Classroom Libraries!

This month, a lot of fantastic books arrived from our friends in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The students of Eaton Elementary School spent last December collecting all of the spare books from their bookshelves at home.  They gathered an impressive amount of books to be sent to our school to fill the classroom libraries in Standards (grades) Kindergarten through nine. Five thousand books!

The books travelled from Wilmington, North Carolina to Charleston, South Carolina wrapped on shipping pallets. They were packed into a container and loaded onto a ship where the books travelled across the Atlantic Ocean, around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa and then across the Indian Ocean to the Port of Kochi on the southern tip of India.

The books arrived at our school in late July after travelling for five hours by lorry from the Port of Kochi. These strong girls carried the boxes of books to this empty classroom where they were unpacked and separated.

Once the books were sorted by grade level, the principal of our school, Sister Lisy, assembled a class of Standard Eight (eighth grade) students to carry the books to the thirty classrooms where they could be read and enjoyed by students.

Even though they had to make multiple trips up and down the hill on a hot and humid afternoon, these sturdy Standard Eight students thoroughly enjoyed bringing the books to the classrooms.

Meanwhile, down in the Kindergarten building, Mrs. Freeda's LKG (lower kindergarten) students spent a class period looking through their books.

By the time we were finished distributing all of the books, students from Kindergarten to Standard Nine were enjoying a classroom library overflowing with books on the shelves.
